Trends in Child & Adolescent Mental Health: What to Look for and What to do About It?
This keynote address will focus on trends in the field of child and adolescent mental health. We will review epidemiologic trends among major categories of mental disorders for children and adolescents, and consider what those trends may look like in the next decade. Changes and additions to child and adolescent disorders in the 5th major revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, due for publication in 2013, will be presented. We will also discuss what to do about mental disorders among children and adolescents. The Evidence-Based Behavioral Practice Model will be presented as a guide for understanding how to best treat mental disorders among children and adolescents. Current evidence-based treatments for common mental disorders in children and adolescents will be briefly reviewed. Finally, future trends for treatment, including psychosocial, pharmacologic, and device interventions will be discussed.
