47th Annual United States Senate Youth Program
Hearst Scholarship
The first phase of this program brings two students from
each state to Washington, D.C., March 7-14, 2009, to participate
in the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Delegates
will be immersed in Washington activities throughout their
week-long stay.
Visits to the Senate, House of Representatives,
Supreme Court, and Pentagon are interspersed with time spent
at various Smithsonian museums. Delegates will hear policy
addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials of various
executive departments, and others. The William Randolph Hearst
Foundation will pay all expenses for the week, including
transportation,
hotel, and meals.
The second phase awards both recipients a college scholarship of $5,000.00. The Hearst Foundation requires that to obtain scholarship funds, a student must, within two years after high school graduation, enroll at an accredited U. S. college or university. The student is encouraged to include courses in government or related subjects to his or her undergraduate program.
A letter from the state superintendent, brochure, and application
concerning the USSYP and Hearst Scholarship is sent to high
schools in early August. Applications can be obtained from
guidance counselors or by clicking on the link in the Resource Box at right. Click
on the
brochure link for a description of the program and associated
rules.
The application cannot be faxed or sent electronically;
a hard copy must be received by the Illinois State Board
of Education no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, October
3, 2008,
with the proper signatures.
