Food Safety Inspections Requirement

Each site participating in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program must obtain two food safety inspections annually for each site where food is prepared or served. While we recognize that there is statewide difficulty in obtaining the two food safety inspections, we would like to stress that you are responsible for requesting such inspections and documenting such efforts.

If you have not received a food sanitation inspection several months into the school year (i.e., December 31), you must write a letter to the local health department requesting the required two food service inspections for each site where food is prepared or served (sample below). The letter must be maintained at the sponsor level or at each site as documentation of your attempt to comply with two food inspections as required by USDA regulations. Program reviews will examine such documentation to comply with this statutory requirement.
