Oak Terrace Elementary School represents the final phase Perkins & Will's group of projects for North Shore School District 112. This new 85,000 square foot elementary school is a replacement facility for an existing school that is currently situated on the same 3.5 acre site. The new 600-student school will be carefully integrated into the current elementary school site which contains a stand of mature oak trees that will be preserved.
The new building design divides the school into grade level "houses." This division reduces the scale of the school to a size which is familiar to small children. The "houses" are dramatically expressed in the planning, design and scale of the exterior of the building. The building's exterior has a decidedly residential character that incorporates brick, limestone and sloped roofs. Thematic courtyards are located between the "houses."
