July 1, 2009: Since there is no budget signed at this point in time there will be no ISBE Board meeting today.
Per the Open Meetings Act, we can give notice of an emergency meeting as soon as practicable, which would be as soon as possible after a budget is signed by the Governor or a veto override by the General Assembly. Either instance would put a final budget in place.
In addition to the Illinois Open Meetings Act posting requirements, we have started an email group of those who wish to be notified by personal email if and when there is a meeting for this week. If you would like to receive an email regarding a potential emergency meeting for this week, please contact Jean Ladage at jladage@isbe.net
The State Board consists of nine members who are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the Senate. Board members serve four-year terms, with State Board membership limited to two consecutive terms.
The board sets educational policies and guidelines for public and private schools, preschool through grade 12, as well as vocational education. It analyzes the aims, needs and requirements of education and recommends legislation to the General Assembly and Governor for the benefit of the more than 2 million school children in Illinois.
