Illinois 5Essentials Survey: Organizing Schools for Improvement
From March 17th to April 25th, 2014, educators and students across Illinois had the opportunity to participate in the second year of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey: Organizing Schools for Improvement. This survey was designed to provide a detailed portrait of the inner workings of a school from an organizational perspective.
“This survey generates data that districts can use to guide their on-going efforts to improve schools and offer students a world-class education,” said State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch. “Districts and the state share the survey results as another improvement tool and as a means to inform parents and community members.”
The first year of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey successfully ran between February and March in 2013. This unique opportunity allowed teachers, students and parents to provide feedback on the critical elements of school effectiveness. The data collected in 2013 will act as a baseline for the data collected this year.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago, on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education.
Accessing the Survey
From March 17th to April 25th, the survey was available for teachers, parents, and guardians. Students in participating schools received the survey during this time period.
The 5Essentials Indicators
The Illinois 5 Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that lead to important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.
The five indicators that positively affect school success are:
- Effective Leaders
- Collaborative Teachers
- Involved Families
- Supportive Environments
- Ambitious Instruction
Research derived from the Five Essentials for School Success has proven that schools strong on at least 3 of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes.
